Meeting Very Special Friend

Kris with Akhu Thupten, a few weeks before he passed away with dignity in his meditative position.

Taktsa village, Aba county, Amdo, January 2006

Some time in our life we meet a very special friend only once. And this is what happened to me when I met a Dzogchen and Chod practitioner named Akhu Thupten. Akhu is a respected title for a monk equivalent to the term “venerable”. He’s neither a lama nor a trulku, but an ordinary monk who exerted himself for the sake of Dharma till he feared no death and found samsara a mere shadow of existence.

Before we departed, we took this photo while he uttered the following wishing words:

Tshe ‘ti la zab mo ‘od gsal rdzog pa chen por dbang ‘byor nas

Bar do med par ka dag bon sku’i go ‘phang thob par smon lam ‘debs//

Having achieved freedom by practicing profound clear light dzogchen in this life,

May you attain the pure dharmakaya state without going to bardo!
